Secure Gateway: Instructions
To initiate a secure Virtual Private Network connection to the Medical Campus using Secure Gateway, do the following:![]()
-
Open your browser (Internet Explorer, Safari or other).
-
Go to the Secure Gateway login page at http://sg.med.miami.edu.
-
Log in using your Medical ID and associated password.
-- At the Secure Gateway login page, the default device type selection is "Windows/ Mac OS X." If you are using a Windows or Mac system, leave this as it is.
-- If you are a PDA user, or running an operating system other than Windows or Mac OS X, change the device type to "PDA/Other." -
If it's the first time you've used Secure Gateway, a small browser "plug-in" (add-on software component) will need to be downloaded and installed. Click on "install" in the window that appears during this process.
-
After you authenticate, an application called "Network Connect" will run on your computer. Once the application has established an encrypted connection, you will see the "lock" icon on the bottom right of your screen in the browser task bar. (See mage above right.)
-
After a short wait, your secure connection will be established. You can now run your applications as if you were on the campus network.
Usage notes
(1) You should turn off pop-up blockers for your browser, either by changing security settings generally, or adding this site to your trusted site list. One of the pop-up windows you will see, confirming the VPN connection is established is at right.
(2) On Windows and Mac systems, all browser windows that you open will be "secure" ones, so open as many as you need.
(3) All other applications can communicate securely as well, such as Outlook email (which requires a VPN for MAPI mode).
(4) Your network file directories must be manually mapped. Contact the Help Desk for assistance.
For any additional assistance with Secure Gateway, your Medical ID and password, or any other connection issues, contact the Help Desk.
