Dell-certified hardware repair

Some of the technical support staff are certified to repair Dell workstations or laptops within their original or extended warranty cycle.  There is no charge for this service.  Dell Computer Corporation reimburses IT for certified repair services.

How to use this service

(1) Contact the Help Desk or submit an IT Work Order.

(2) A technician will visit the workstation or laptop and troubleshoot potential problems. Parts that need to be ordered will be removed (they will need to be returned to Dell).  Depending on severity, the device may need to be taken back to the Information Technology lab.

(3) Parts will arrive in our office in a few days (this time-frame is dependent on parts availability at the manufacturer).  A technician will install the new hardware as required and run system diagnostics to ensure that it is working properly.

Data restoration

Note that in the case of a hard drive failure, we are only authorized to install applications for which the University has a license, or where the requestor has the original or licensed copy of software that was installed on a computer's hard drive prior to disk failure.

If your Dell system has a damaged hard drive with data on it that you need restored, we can coordinate the restore process with any of several third-party companies if we cannot retrieve it for you.  These services are not free -- indeed, they are often expensive, costing several thousand dollars -- and typically take several weeks to turn around.  Also, there are no guarantees that your data will be recoverable.

***We highly recommend you take advantage of your Home Directory or a Department File Share to store your critical data.  The two critical features are part of your Core Service.***
