Newcomers: Getting oriented, getting started

Physical and virtual orientation

This is a "tour" of some of your virtual resources on campus.  We realize, however, that getting around the physical campus may present one of your most important challenges in the first few days.  It's a crowded, complex landscape.

You can use the online Medical campus interactive map to find facilities on campus.  Interactive maps for the Gables and Rosensteil campuses are available as well.  (The Security Department has free paper maps of the campus available at their offices.  See below.)

For a campus tour without leaving your desk, visit the Medical Center Webcam tour page.

Looking for a person instead of a location?  Use the online people search engine for the University.  You can also use the Global Address List accessed by Outlook or Outlook Web Access email.

First stops and steps

One of your first stops as a new employee or student will be at the Department of Security, on the ground floor of the Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 145.  There you will obtain your physical ID badge, which must be worn at all times in and around Medical Center facilities.  Security is also the place to get information about parking.

Employees will also need to attend an orientation with the Professional Development and Training Office, located in the Dominion Parking Garage, Suite 155.  Part of that orientation will be provided via online content, delivered using the ULearn system.

Your supervisor will need to request basic IT access for you (for Core Services), and then access to the specialized applications you will be using.  Some of these specialized applications will require completion of a user training program before access is granted.   (More information on this is provided in Information for Supervisors.)
