Newcomers: Hardware, software and technical support

Hardware and software

Medical Center affiliates have access to a broad range of site-licensed software, available without charge for work-related use on University-owned systems.   We also have some licenses for software use for personal machines (e.g., anti-virus and anti-spyware). 

Do-it-yourself software download and installation is available from the software download section of this site.  For workplace systems, we can in most cases install the software remotely, from our Help Desk, without any need for access to your machine.  There is no charge for this service.

Only approved software may be installed on University systems.  If the software you desire is not listed in the applications directory or the software download page, you should assume that it has not been approved.  Contact the Help Desk to make a request for approval of new software.  We want to provide what you need to do your work; we also want to protect you and others against dangerous software.

All UMSM departments can purchase Apple, Cingular, Dell or Lenovo products/services at contract (discount) prices through our Technology Store.  Delivery, installation and configuration are included as part of the purchase at no additional charge.  

Employees and students can also get discounts for personal purchases made through the Technology Store.  Unfortunately, you're on your own for installation and configuration of personal systems.

Desktop and mobile device support

Support for and information about hardware and software for your desktop or laptop is provided by our Desktop Support group.  Some of the group's technical services are free (provided no parts replacements are needed).  The group also offers warranty service for Dell systems.

Support for palmtops, PDAs, data-capable cell phones, and other mobile devices is provided by both our Datacenter Operations and Desktop Support groups.  For additional information on both desktop and mobile device support, click here.
