Outlook

Function

Outlook is the most commonly used email software for Windows systems.  (It also comes in a "lite" version called Outlook Express.)  On the medical campus, Outlook is the standard software used to access Exchange email if you have a Windows system.

Access

Microsoft Outlook is client email software that is installed on your Windows system.  We have a site license for Outlook as a part of Microsoft Office.

If you do not have Outlook installed on your system, you can access Exchange emaiil using a full-featured version of Outlook at the Citrix Applications Portal.  Or you can use a somewhat limited Web version called Outlook Web Access that requires only a browser.  Both of these require a Medical ID.

Documentation

See the Outlook 2003 User Guide (PDF, 4.4MB, 32pp).  An extensive collection of training materials is available from Microsoft's Help and How-To for Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007.

Additional considerations

See the discussion of email clients for Exchange, which includes links to comparisons of alternatives for Windows and Apple/Mac systems.

Outlook supports the MAPI email protocol for communication with Exchange, but only on-campus or when connecting remotely via VPN, and only for Windows systems.

Outlook email (using MAPI and IMAP) is backed up nightly, along with other network files.  However, a backup cannot occur with open files, so you should generally not leave Outlook running overnight.  Close it when your work day ends.
