Microsoft SharePoint provides a suite of tools for building Web-accessible, access-limited collaboration spaces -- what are sometimes called "intranet" or "portal" spaces.

Consider use of network file services for access-limited content sharing.

SharePoint Services provides basic tools for constructing a collaborative, access-limited Web space.  SharePoint Portal Services provides additional functionality and customization (e.g., "portal" point of access, enterprise search, content management).
