Symantec Anti-Virus (SAV)

Function

Symantec Anti-Virus (SAV) is an anti-malware application.  It complements the protection offered by anti-spyware applications.

Access

SAV is client software that must be installed on your personal computer.  We have a site license for it.  You can download it for free -- for both workplace and personal use -- at the Software Download section of this website.

Documentation

Use the built-in help resources ("Help" on the taskbar).

Support

Contact the Information Technology Help Desk.

Additional considerations

Different versions available for Windows XP and Vista.  (For Windows 2000, use the XP version.)  Different versions available for Intel-based and non-Intel Apple/Mac systems.

As with anti-spyware, it is critical to keep anti-virus "signatures" updated.  Be sure to configure SAV for automatic updating.

Unlike with anti-spyware, only a single anti-virus program should be installed on a computer.  You must remove any prior version of SAV, or any other anti-virus client software, before installing it.
