Paging service options and rates

Obtaining paging services

As with mobile phone services, paging services are obtained directly from vendors by departments, using a departmental P-card or a Purchase Order.  (This is in contrast to computer purchases, which are normally done by Medical IT on behalf of departments, using an IDR for charge-backs.)

Wide-area paging services are available to UM affiliates under a contract with USA Mobility (a.k.a., Arch Wireless or Metrocall), as well as a hanful of other vendors.  USA Mobility is the required vendor for UMMG affiliates, and is generally the preferred source based on both price and network quality.

Paging rates and coverage options

Pagers come in one-way numeric, one-way alphanumeric and two-way alphanumeric varieties.  For each type of device, coverage ranges from local to nationwide, with attendant differences in monthly cost.  UMMG affiliates are required to use alphanumeric pagers.
