Know the benefits and risks of portable hard drives

The price of portable "external" hard drives has plummeted in the last few years.  You can now get hundreds of gigabytes for under a hundred dollars, and terabytes (thousands of gigabytes) for a few hundred dollars.  Should you rely on one of these drives?  Maybe.  But be aware of both the risks and benefits.
