Choosing a mobile phone
There are many types of mobile phones on the market today and picking out the one that’s going to fit your lifestyle is a challenge. Smartphones boast high-speed internet connections, cameras, music players, and many other features. In the end, choosing a phone depends on what you need it to do.
Medical Information Technology recommends campus users with a need to access their information on the go purchase a Blackberry or Windows Mobile phone. Both of these phones allow you to stay connected to your Medical School email, calendar, contacts, and tasks.
There are other phones out there that will allow you to access your email, but for now, only those mentioned above allow real time syncing of your email, contacts, calendar items, and tasks.
For Blackberry phones, users MUST purchase the Blackberry Enterprise unlimited data plan for use with a Medical School email account (the email account is free, the data plan must be purchased from your cell carrier.)
Other types of phones should be purchased with an unlimited data plan. Medical IT recommends an unlimited data plan to avoid overage charges since the phones are constantly sending and receiving data. Please keep in mind that text message plans are not related to data plans.
Speak to the person in charge of your department’s purchases to see which approved vendor takes care of your department’s mobile phone needs. Once you have activated your phone, please call Medical IT at 305-243-5999 to set yup our phone up to access your Medical School email account, contacts, calendar, and tasks.
