Site-licensed software
Many commonly-used software products are available at no charge to School of Medicine affiliates, provided the use is confined to the workplace. In a few cases (anti-virus and anti-spyware) the software may be used in any context. Other software is available at a discounted price, but not for free; it requires purchases of a "license key."
Types of licensing and use
Three categories of software are available for download from this Web site, based on three different kinds of use "license":
Site-licensed software may be downloaded free for use on University-owned systems, for work-related purposes. Site licenses for personal use have been purchased for a few products (e.g., anti-virus, anti-spyware). These products are marked. Other than those specifically marked, site-licensed software may not be downloaded for use on personal systems. To download site-licensed software, you must log in with your Medical ID and then agree to the terms of the license agreement. You can come by our offices to obtain free CDs of anti-virus and anti-spyware software for your personal system.
License-key software is available to departments at contract prices, but is not site-licensed. A license key (to activate the software) must be purchased to authorize the correct number of installations. Contact our Procurement Group for information or assistance.
Recommended freeware has been approved for installation on University-owned systems. It may also be downloaded for personal systems. We strongly recommend that you avoid "free" software from other sources, because of the risk of malware contamination.
Note that all software downloads are logged and audited.
