Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)

In an information technology context, the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) describes a logical area that resides between the public Internet and an internal private network -- in this case, the Medical Center network.

The DMZ is typically used for Web services or devices that require a public IP address.  Basic networked computers do not reside on the DMZ; they should reside in the protected, private network.

A firewall or a router usually protects the DMZ with traffic-filtering capabilities, often with the aid of an Intrusion Detection/Prevention Service.
