Encryption for Portable Computers

Encryption for Portable Computers

•  •  •  •  •

The University has recently obtained licensing for "whole-disk encryption" software for Windows and Mac computers.  Starting August 1st, this software will be required on all new laptops purchased by medical campus departments.  (Coral Gables IT will have a similar program for departments on that campus, starting about the same time.) Installation of the software will occur prior to delivery.

  • What is the cost of installing the software?

The software licensing is centrally funded, so there is no charge for installations on portable computers purchased with UM funds.

  • How can I have the software installed on my computer?

If you purchase a laptop after August 1st, you don’t need to ask.  Installation will occur automatically.  Installs on new laptops will be done overnight, on day of arrival, and should delay delivery no more than a day.

If you would like to have the encryption software installed on an "old" laptop (purchased prior to August 1st) contact a Help Desk staff member at 305-243-5999 to make a request. Installations will be scheduled on a first-requested, first-served basis, but we will also prioritize response by the use-case for the device in question.

  • Who needs to have this software installed?

Loss or theft of portable computers containing sensitive data is one of the most important security vulnerabilities facing organizations today.  Anyone who cannot avoid keeping sensitive data on a laptop should seriously consider having it installed.  (Your best strategy is to avoid sensitive data storage entirely on a portable device.)
