SMTP Configuration for Secure IMAP Connections to Exchange 2007
The following are instructions for several email clients connecting to the Medical School Exchange Email system using the IMAP protocol. If your email client is set up with an Exchange account or if you are using a version of ActiveSync, you do not need to make any changes.
Exchange 2007 requires using port 587 instead of 25 for secure outgoing mail. Click on the appropriate link below for your email client.
| Apple Mail | Entourage | iPhone | Microsoft Outlook & Outlook Express | Thunderbird 2 | Windows Mobile Phones | General Settings |
Apple Mail
Open Mail and navigate to your IMAP Account's settings.

Click Server Settings under the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" field.
If SSL is enabled, make sure the Server Port is 587.

Entourage
Open Entourage and navigate to your IMAP account's settings.

Under the SMTP Server field, click the button that reads "Click here for advanced sending options".

If SSL is enabled, make sure the port is set to 587.
iPhone
If you have an iPhone and are running iPhone software previous to version 2.0, we recommend you upgrade the software. It's free and can be done via iTunes. If you cannot upgrade the software, navigate to General Settings>Mail and choose the IMAP account associated with your Medical School email.

Scroll down and touch Advanced.

Choose the SMTP server associated with your Medical School email account.

If SSL is enabled, make sure the port is set to 587.
Microsoft Outlook & Outlook Express
To change SMTP settings in Microsoft Outlook & Outlook Express, navigate to the Control Panel in Windows. Then open Mail. Choose Email Accounts. Select your IMAP account, then click Change.

Click More Settings.
Click the Advanced Tab in the following window.

Under the "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" field, choose TLS as the "type of encryped connection" and set the port to 587.
Thunderbird 2
Navigate to your IMAP account's settings in Thunderbird.
Select Outgoing Server (SMTP).

Select the SMTP account associated with your Medical School email account and choose Edit.

Choose TLS and set the port to 587.
Windows Mobile Phones
If your phone runs on Windows Mobile 5 or 6, we recommend you use ActiveSync to receive your Medical School Email, Contacts, and Calendar items. The following steps will help you configure ActiveSync.
Navigate to the ActiveSync program and open it. Choose the following settings.
1. Server Address: mail.med.miami.edu
2. If available, check the option for "This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection."
3. User name: The Medical-ID username you use to logon to your medical domain PC and Exchange email goes here (e.g., "dshalala" without the quotes).
4. Password: The Medical-ID password you use to logon to your medical domain PC and Exchange email goes here.
5. Domain: Enter "medical" here (without the quotes).
Depending on your phone, you might see a section that asks you to "Choose the data you want to synchronize:" with options for Contacts, Calendar, Email, and Tasks. Depending on your phone and its operating system, these choices may vary and are up to you to set.
