Cray 2 Supercomputer (1985). The Cray-2 vector supercomputer was the fastest machine in the world when it was released, replacing Cray's own X-MP in that spot. The Cray-2 was bumped off of the top spot by the ETA-10G in 1990. Source: Cray Research.

Datacenter facilities

The Datacenter Operations team manages datacenter services, including servers that support mission-critical systems for the Medical Center and remote sites.  All datacenters have a variety of physical and technical protections to assure maximum security and minimal downtime.

Server site protections

On-campus datacenters offer:

  • physical access controlled by security systems
  • intruder alarms monitored by the Department of Security
  • video surveillance/recording systems monitored by the Department of Security
  • environmental control via HVAC systems
  • Uninterruptible Power Supply and emergency generators to maintain power without interruption
  • FM200 and Inergen fire suppression systems to extinguish fires without damaging equipment or backup tape systems

Server/service functionality is monitored with independent utilities.  These tools monitor the condition of all hosted systems and network connectivity in real time.  They are configured to notify staff when any function or subset of the host system begins to fail or is predicted to fail, so corrective actions can be taken.

Server/application hosting

The datacenter team will host your server, application, Web service or data collection in these facilities as needed.  For more information, click here.
