Anti-virus and anti-spyware
What is it?
Anti-virus and anti-spyware software are essential to protect your computer. Such software examines files and communications traffic (such as email) to prevent your computer's software and data files from being damaged.
What does it cost?
Keeping current with protective software is easy and free, under a site license that extends to both workplace and home computers of Medical Center faculty, staff and students.
- The anti-virus software is Symantec Anti-Virus (SAV). It is available in versions for Windows PCs and Apple/Mac systems. Note that there are different versions of SAV for Windows XP and Vista, and different ones for Intel-based Macs and pre-Intel Macs.
How current is "current enough"?
It's critical that you have a recent version of SAV (or alternatives) installed for your particular type of computer. Normally, it's safe to wait a year or so between upgrades, provided you have "live updates" turned on to keep the malware signature files updated. (For an explanation of signatures and other elements of protective software, see the Learn more section below.)
Because recent malicious software attacks have targeted older SAV versions, we recommend all Windows users update to the current version, even if you have upgraded within the last few months. The current versions are 11 for Windows 2000/XP and Windows Vista.
The SAV versions available in the Software Download section are always the most current available.
Is it required?
Anti-virus software is required for computers used on the Medical Center network, to protect your computer and other computers on the network. Anti-spyware is recommended but not required.
How do I get it?
Workplace systems There are two ways to get anti-virus and anti-spyware on your workplace system:
- Do it yourself installation using the Software Download section of this site. Click on the link and follow the instructions.
- Help Desk installation by a technical support specialist. Call 305-243-5999 to arrange for this free service. Installation for Windows systems can usually be done remotely over the network, without the need for a physical visit.
Personal systems For your personal (home) system, you must use the do-it-yourself Software Download method. Help Desk services generally do not extend to home computers.
