Information for Clinicians

If you are unfamiliar with information technology services on the medical campus, we suggest you begin with the overview in the Information for Newcomers before reading this page.  If you have a problem, or questions of any kind, you can always begin with our Help Desk.  It's open 24/7.  Use the Get Help form, send email to help@med.miami.edu or call 305-243-5999.

Core services and service providers

A summary of information technology services from the School of Medicine's Department of Information Technology is provided here, in the Core Services listing, and in other "Information for" pages.  For more detailed information, you can use the links in the services directory.

Medical Information Technology is just one of several groups providing IT support and services for the Medical Center.  For a list of the others, along with their functions and contact information, click here

The clinical systems landscape

There are a large number of clinical applications servicing the medical campus community.  Most of these applications are managed centrally by either the JMH Management Information Systems department or the UM Clinical Enterprise Technologies department.

Introducing new technologies into the clinical care environment is both challenging and rewarding, as the University continues to press towards a "paperless" environment while ensuring that those systems integrate with clinical and business workflows.  Clinical care provider involvement in these projects is critical to the successful deployment, sustainability, and effectiveness of the overall digital initiatives.

Major applications include:

  • RIS - Radiology Information System
  • PACS - Pictorial Archive and Communication System
  • Pharmacy
  • EMR - Electronic Medical Record
  • EMPI - Electronic Master Patient Index
  • IDX Enterprise
  • Medical record document imaging services (OTG)
  • Credentialing
  • Scheduling
  • Registration
  • Clearing house
  • Training

Access to clinical and other sensitive systems

To access most clinical and business systems, you need to request access rights through the data and application custodians for the particular applications of interest.  We provide links to and information about most of the major systems in the applications directory

In the "information about" page -- reached by clicking on the Usage instructions icon next to an application's name -- you will find contact information for the data/application custodian for that system.

On-campus access to these systems is available via the wired and wireless networks.  Off-site (remote) access generally requires using the Citrix Application Portal, though sometimes a VPN connection will suffice.
