Information for Technology Liaisons

If you are unfamiliar with information technology services on the medical campus, we suggest you begin with the overview in the Information for Newcomers before reading this page.  If you have a problem, or questions of any kind, you can always begin with our Help Desk.  It's open 24/7.  Use the Get Help form, send email to help@med.miami.edu or call 305-243-5999.

What is a Liaison?

Most departments and centers at the School of Medicine have a designated "Information Technology Liaison."  IT Liaisons work directly with Information Technology staff on their organizations' specific IT issues.

If you have been designated as the IT Liaison for your organization then you play a important role.  You are a means of communicating information to your colleagues -- about IT products and services, policies and procedures, and time-sensitive IT issues such as newly-discovered hardware or software vulnerabilities.  You also help identify upcoming projects that may benefit from coordination between your organization and IT.

In turn, you can communicate critical information back to us and help shape information technology support operations to meet your needs.  You help us investigate user complaints and concerns, identify common needs across the enterprise, and participate in specifying the functional requirements for products and services that will make up the School of Medicine's next-generation computing environment.

Designating Liaisons

We welcome enquiries from departments and centers about designations of IT Liaisons.  A Liaison may be a person already performing "system administrator" tasks or otherwise functioning as a "super-user" for a particular information system or application.

However, a Liaison need have no particular technical background -- just an understanding of the organization's particular IT needs.

Training and support for Liaisons

IT Liaisons are invited to attend Medical IT briefing sessions, to become familiar with our internal support processes and procedures.  It is critical that IT resources are deployed and supported in a consistent manner across the entire enterprise, to minimize potential networking conflicts and maintain adherence to license agreements.   You ensure that consistency happens.

We do our best to treat IT Liaisons as part of our extended family.  We encourage you to tell us how we can better support you, and help you support your organization.
